How to write a check

A short, no-nonsense walkthrough — the steps, the gotchas, and answers to the usual questions.

2 minutes Easy

Writing a check is still handy for rent, gifts, or anywhere cards aren't taken. There are six parts to fill in, and getting them right keeps your payment from being rejected. Here's exactly what goes where.

What you'll need

  • A check
  • A pen with blue or black ink

Step by step

  1. Date itWrite today's date on the line in the top-right corner.
  2. Fill in 'Pay to the order of'On this line, write the full name of the person or company you're paying.
  3. Enter the amount in numbersIn the small box to the right, write the amount numerically, for example 125.50.
  4. Write the amount in wordsOn the line below the payee, spell out the dollars and write the cents as a fraction, for example: One hundred twenty-five and 50/100. Draw a line through any leftover space so nothing can be added.
  5. Add a memo (optional)On the 'Memo' line at the bottom-left, note what the check is for, such as 'July rent' or an account number.
  6. Sign itSign your name on the line at the bottom-right, matching the signature your bank has on file. A check isn't valid without it.

Handy tips

  • Use a pen, never pencil, so the check can't be altered.
  • Record it in your check register or banking app right away so you don't forget the money is spoken for.

Heads up

  • Only sign a check once every other line is filled in. Never sign a blank check.

FAQ

What if the words and the numbers don't match?

Banks legally go by the amount written in words, so double-check the two agree before handing it over.

Do I have to fill in the memo line?

No, it's optional and just for your own reference.

What are the numbers printed along the bottom?

Those are your bank's routing number and your account number. You don't write anything there — they're already printed on the check.
